Frequently Asked Questions

I'm interested in climbing. How do I get started?

Step 1 is to sign up for our Intro to Rock Climbing lesson. Pick a day and time you have a few hours available and come out and give it a go.

If you find you enjoy the sport, we have many programs and activities designed for beginners to learn more about the sport and meet other new climbers.

What do I need to know before I can climb?

Climbing is just that - climbing. Anyone can climb - our facility has routes and terrain available for all ages and abilities.

Before you can work the safety ropes for other climbers, you must learn how to "belay". There are 90 minute belay courses available every day at our facility.

What do I need to bring? What do I wear?

You should wear comfortable clothes suitable for exercising in. Running shoes are fine for your first visits. We do rent climbing harnesses, climbing shoes and chalk bags if needed. New climbers typically rent gear to get started and buy their own equipment once they decide that climbing is something they enjoy.

Water is always a good idea, and is the only food/liquid allowed onto out padded floors. Our facility has change rooms with showers and lockers (bring your own lock).

How old do you have to be to climb?

Climbing is suitable for all ages. Most children do not become interested in indoor rock climbing until they reach the age of 6 or 7. All children age 13 & under must be accompanied by an adult.

You must be at least 13 years of age and be big enough and mature enough to learn how to belay (i.e. work the safety ropes for other climbers).

What can I do if I'm not belay-certified?

Many people jump right into bouldering, which is climbing on shorter walls with thick pads on the floor instead of ropes.

We also have an informal 8 o'clock climbing club for those who need some practice and people to climb with.

Do I need a reservation or can I just show up?

Climbers over the age of 14 can drop in anytime for a climbing session on our bouldering walls - younger climbers must be accompanied by an adult.

Once you are belay-certified at our facility, you can use the top rope walls at your leisure.

To take our Learn to Belay course, you need to reserve a spot in one of our lesson times. Online booking is available.

Is climbing a good activity for a group or family?

Absolutely yes. Climbing is one of the few sports that can be enjoyed together by people of different skill, size, and age.

Many parents take our Learn to Belay course then come back and enjoy fun and healthy times with their kids. Some parents prefer to keep both feet firmly planted on the ground at all times (perfectly okay). They enjoy just working the ropes for their kids.

How large of a group can Climber's Rock accomodate?

Our climbing facility can comfortably accomodate up to 500 people at any given time. If you have a large group that requires instruction or belay assistance, we require advance notice to arrange for the required staffing. Minimum notice is 1 week - the more advance notice you can provide, the better.

I've climbed before, but not at your gym. What can I do?

If you are an experienced climber, but have not been to Climber's Rock before, you will simply be asked to take a belay test and show our staff that you know how to belay safely. Once you pass the test and become belay certified, you are able to climb anytime at our gym.

Are you open on Holidays?

We are open every day of the year EXCEPT Dec. 25th and Jan. 1st. See our Hours & Directions page for more information...
