Climber's Rock

GRIGRI. Figure 8. Double Back.

If you have no idea what we're talking about, don't worry. Our community of climbers and climbing instructors are here to show you the way...

I climb because absolutely every time I do, my mind and body come up with new ways to impress me with the way they work together.

Allison R.

I'd bet that a lot of people climb as a way to exercise and keep fit. Some will probably tell you that, aside from those things, they climb because it's a great way to meet new people. And, I'd wager that there are those who climb because they enjoy the sensation of wearing really tight shoes with no socks on. All those reasons are good ones, and aside for the tight shoe thing, I'd count those among the more appealing features of the sport.

But when I really think about why I climb, I think, for me, it has something to do with a deep seeded need for self-flagellation without the religious or sadomasochistic overtones. I say this as a new climber who has spent the better part of 7 visits to Climber's Rock trying to get to the top of what was route number 11 on the bouldering wall. As far as I'm concerned, that route is a hoax! Whoever put that one up there was playing a big joke on every one of us; it can't be done. Some say they've done it... yea right. Everest, yes. Route 11, nope.

What else explains my seemingly futile efforts to mount this summit other than a subconscious want for physical pain, mental exhaustion, and blistered hands? I'm going back today though. I plan to strain my arms, shred my fingers, pray for divine intervention, and go home feeling physically spent, and emasculated.

Derrick M.

I climb because it feels impossible; because it hurts; because I can't rely on anyone but me. It's physically the hardest thing I've ever done. It engages the body and the mind, and both have never felt stronger after I reach the top.

Maria R.

Because when I'm in my zone, hanging by a couple of fingers there's no head-space to worry about how ridiculous I must look up there.

Parents...

If you would like to belay for your children, we recommend you take our Intro lesson at your convenience. Once you take the course and become belay-certified, you are free to climb with your kids whenever you like. (A great way to spend a family outing...)

Our goal: teach you how to climb safe

If at any time while at the gym you're not sure of anything - just ask. We're here to help!

Learn to Belay

Our Learn to Belay lesson includes everything you need to get started and learn to be safe while enjoying the exciting sport of indoor rock climbing.

Our instructors will show you how to inspect and properly put on a climbing harness, how to tie into a rope using a figure-8 climbing knot, and how to safely work a belay device (used to "catch" a climber when they fall and lower them to the ground after they reach the top).

This lesson is also great for parents planning a birthday party for their son or daughter. Learn to work the ropes yourself (while keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground) and have a climbing party whenever you like. You will learn everything you need to know to enjoy the sport with your friends and family without having to put one foot up in the air (unless you want to of course).

Online Booking Available

Check our prices page for rates and special offers. Please note: You'll be required to take a belay certification test on your next visit to Climber's Rock to be sure you've retained the proper safety procedures. We'll remind you of anything forgotten and allow for a provisional day pass until you're able to complete the test with no assistance.

Click here to book your lesson now through our online scheduler or give us a call (905) 633-7625.

8 o'clock Climbing Club

Experience social networking the Climber's Rock way. Every weeknight (M-F) from 8 o'clock on, new and experienced climbers alike come out and climb and have a good time.

Pre-requisites: none (just show up). There's always a friendly club member to climb with regardless of your experience. New climbers are always welcome. It's a great way to practice newly learned climbing skills and meet other new climbers.

Belay Certification

In order to be considered "belay-certified" at our facility, you must be over the age of 13 and demonstrate your knowledge and performance of the following:

  • Properly put on a climbing harness and perform self and buddy checks
  • Properly tie climbing rope to harness with follow-through 8 and keeper knot
  • Demonstrate proper belay technique using a harness-attached GRIGRI with locking carabiner
